About Dr. Mary Woodson
A therapist who understands the pressure to perform
I’m Dr. Mary Woodson, a licensed counselor, doctoral-level clinician, and the owner of Sacred Moon Counseling PLLC. I’ve spent over a decade working with people who are driven, thoughtful, and deeply capable, but are quietly exhausted from years of carrying more than they should. I know what it’s like to hold high expectations while feeling like you’re running on empty. You may feel pressure to look like you have it together on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or just tired of performing. Trust me, I hear you.
The therapy space I create is intentional and sacred. I believe it should feel like a place where you don’t have to translate yourself, shrink yourself, or prove anything. A place where you can show up fully as you are and be met with understanding, not judgment.
My Approach
My main focus is on connection. I pay close attention to the details of what you say and what you don’t say. I listen holistically, not just to your symptoms, but to the full picture of who you are and the systems that shape your life. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. I adapt to you. Some people need structure. Some need space to vent. Some need tools they can use immediately, and others need time to process and understand deeper patterns. Most people need a combination of things. My role is to meet you where you are and help you figure out what actually works for you.
I work extensively with:
Adolescents (12–19)
College students
Young adults and adult professionals
Families navigating teens who feel overwhelmed or disconnected
High-achieving burnout
Neurodivergency (ADHD/AuDHD, autism)
Trauma
Victims of narcissistic abuse

Who I Work With
I earned my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Adam’s State University in Alamosa, Colorado. I hold a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health and Addictions Counseling, and a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Neurocience from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. I have been practicing counseling for over 11 years in community mental health settings, the suicide crisis hotline, and in private practice.
I’m licensed as a:
Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS) in North Carolina- License #: S15405
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado- License #: LPC.0020809
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Wisconsin- License #: 11827 - 125
Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) in North Carolina- License #: LCAS-25676
My background in both mental health and substance use allows me to hold complexity without needing to separate parts of your experience. Many of my clients are navigating multiple layers at once, such as trauma, ADHD, burnout, identity issues, relationship problems, etc. Whatever your goals may be, I’m trained to support all of it together.
My Background
As a Black woman, it matters deeply to me that therapy is a space rooted in social justice, liberation, inclusivity, and cultural awareness. I work with clients across many identities and backgrounds, including BIPOC (Black Indigenous People Of Color) communities, LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Questioning Intersex, Ace/Aro, etc) individuals, all religious and spiritual backgrounds, and people navigating multiple marginalized identities. Multicultural competency isn’t something I add into my work, it’s the foundation of how I practice.
I’m also very aware that for many people, especially in BIPOC communities, asking for help can feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. You are allowed to have needs in this space. You are allowed to take up space here.
My Values
Techniques I Use
My work blends deep clinical training with a very human approach.
Depending on your needs, I draw from:
Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore your inner world with curiosity instead of judgment
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build real-life skills for emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you reconnect with your values
Somatic approaches to support nervous system regulation
Trauma-focused work to process experiences that are still showing up in your daily life
Narrative therapy and radical healing approaches that center your identity, history, and power
Addiction treatment practices for dual diagnosis support
Whether we’re slowing things down so your body can feel safe again, or unpacking patterns that keep repeating in your relationships, I aim to create a space that is both supportive and effective.
A Note From Me
I started Sacred Moon Counseling because I wanted to create a space where people could stop performing and start healing, space where you don’t have to minimize your experiences or question whether your struggles are “serious enough.” This is a space where you are seen as a whole person, not just a diagnosis. You don’t have to have it all figured out to start therapy. If you’re even considering it, that’s enough.
If you’re interested in working together, I offer a free 15-minute consultation so we can see if it feels like a good fit.
You deserve a space where you can show up fully and be understood.
